He described sexuality as a proxy issue for larger debates in the church about the authority of the Bible, the reality of sin and beliefs about salvation. She described the atmosphere in the room as a “Pentecost moment,” in which the presence of the Holy Spirit was palpable. The overturning of the 40-year-old ban on “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” passed overwhelmingly and without debate in a package of measures that had already received strong support at the committee level. Capital campaigns are conducted every few years to fund major and long-term expenses and capital investments in the church. Saint Margaret’s was originally founded to meet the needs of the rapidly growing population of southeast Charlotte.

Chet Jechura, the pastor of Good Shepherd UMC in Baltimore, wept as he watched the vote at home via livestream. Almost exactly five years ago, when the denomination tightened enforcement of its ban against gay clergy, he had broken into sobs while he was serving communion. Many conservatives had been disturbed by what they saw as the church’s failure to enforce its bans on gay clergy and same-sex weddings. Some leaders in more progressive regions had begun defying the restrictions, and the church now has a number of openly gay clergy and two gay bishops. Delegates, meeting in Charlotte, N.C., also voted to bar local leaders from penalizing clergy or churches for holding, or declining to hold, same-sex weddings. The vote effectively allows same-sex marriage in the church for the first time, although the original penalty was already unevenly enforced.
Worship with us!
We can be hesitant to lead with or even list it as part of our being. Evangelize-All baptized persons are called to a life of witness, by word and by deed. At Saint Margaret’s, we are going to endeavor to equip our members with the tools and confidence to do just that. Serve-Jesus commands His disciples to serve the poor, most specifically widows, orphans, and the marginalized. Worship-Every disciple of Jesus should be engaged in the weekly and regular practice of corporate worship. We are a Christ-centered Episcopal church rooted in scripture, tradition and reason; respectful of and strengthened by our differences.

Delegates also voted this week to end a ban on using United Methodist funds to “promote acceptance of homosexuality,” a change particularly welcomed by those in ministries working with L.G.B.T.Q. people. Though the end of the ban on gay clergy applies to the global church, regionalization means that in practice it may primarily affect churches in the United States. The United Methodist Church removed on Wednesday its longstanding ban on ordaining gay clergy, formalizing a shift in policy that had already begun in practice and that had prompted the departure of a quarter of its U.S. congregations in recent years. In a meeting on Wednesday, church leaders also voted to allow L.G.B.T.Q. weddings. The absence of delegates from churches that left the denomination accounted for the quick reversal of the policies.

Theologically, it is a time in which the Church looks back in remembrance to the great gift of our Savior’s birth, while at the same time looking forward to the promised second Coming of Jesus to reign as Lord of His re-created cosmos. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming, which is where this season gets its name and meaning. Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church is an exciting, vibrant, growing, and sacramentally centered parish in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion! Located in Waxhaw, North Carolina, we are located just south of Charlotte in one of the fastest growing counties of the state.

We are excited about our shared ministry together, and look forward to the new and exciting things God has planned for this Holy place. You can also worship with us via the Christ Church app and Facebook Live. The broadcast video remains available on the website through midday Wednesday each week.
During the Seventies and early Eighties, the Elizabeth neighborhood 'grayed,’ and as older parish members died, their numbers were not replaced by young families, many of whom remained unchurched. Also, some parishioners became dissatisfied with the changes in the Episcopal Church. In 1955 St. Peter’s leadership established an endowment, now with over $8 million pledged in legacy gifts.
At their most recent meeting in 2019, Methodists voted to tighten an existing ban on same-sex marriages and gay and lesbian clergy. Conservatives in the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for example, have formed breakaway denominations in reaction to the acceptance of gay clergy. Catholic Church doctrine forbids same-sex relationships, but Pope Francis has alarmed some traditionalists by allowing priests to bless same-sex couples.
Rector’s Welcome
I will continue to pray for you, and I hope that you will pray for me. I cannot wait to see you this Sunday, and I so look forward to being blessed by your prayers and your presence. If you were able to attend ourmost recent annual meeting, SaintMargaret’s is at a very crucialjuncture. We have survived thepandemic lockdowns, have a verycommitted group of followers ofJesus, and our church is on stableground. But Saint Margaret’s is notcalled to survive, we are called to goand build the Kingdom of God. The Rev. Tracy Cox, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh, said she’s cautiously hopeful for changes to the rules on ordination and marriage. The congregation, which has long been LGBTQ-affirming, held a commissioning service on April 14 for those attending the General Conference.
A large majority of African bishops, while affirming their opposition to LGBTQ ordination or marriage, have said in a joint statement they are committed to remaining in the United Methodist Church. Jerry Kulah of the advocacy group Africa Initiative said that while it will be up to individual conferences in Africa to decide whether to stay or leave the denomination, he believes it’s time to leave. Bishop Karen Oliveto of the Mountain Sky Episcopal Area, the first openly lesbian bishop ordained in the church, said the tenor of the current conference is positive.

Mr. Renfroe is attending the meeting in Charlotte but says that given the outcome, he will leave the denomination within the next month. He cautioned that many denominations that have moved in the direction that Methodists have taken this week have seen their numbers dramatically decline.
Lent is a season gifted to us by the Church that allows us to focus on those things that burden our souls and keep us from a full and transformed relationship with Jesus. People think I’m crazy when I say this, but Lent is my favorite season of the Church year. As we enter the summer months, remember that the church will be open for worship every Sunday.
